Rogue dialers are computer software components which can be downloaded and spread, most often over the internet. Once a rogue dialer has installed itself on your computer, it will disrupt a phone-based modem connection and innocuously cause your computer to use its dialup modem to connect to a premium-rate connection number. Things to watch out for include strange popup windows which occur when downloading illicit music, software and pornography files. Rogue dialers are ineffective if a computer's dialup modem is not connected, so broadband users have little to worry about.
