Any program that secretly monitors how a computer is used can be considered to be spyware. Users of a computer infected with spyware may be entering sensitive data such as bank account and/or credit card numbers, usernames and passwords, social security numbers or other data that is collected by the spyware. Once this data is collected by the spyware, it is usually sent to the author who will undoubtedly attempt to put the ill-gotten information to use in some highly undesirable way. Spyware detection and removal software is a virtual must in the digital age.
