Music downloads explained

Music download websites have changed the way we purchase and listen to music. Music files (such as the MP3) allow us to download music from the internet and then listen to it on our computer or then transfer it to another device such as a mp3 player or mobile phone.

You can search for millions of tracks, by artist, title or album name. Most services will also allow you to preview a track, so you know that you are purchasing the right song.

Variety

Music download websites vary in the type of music they offer. Some focus on well known popular artists, while other focus on unsigned talent. They all tend to differ in the volume and quantity of music available as it depends on which record labels they have agreements with to sell their music. Some websites also offer audiobooks, which are spoken word titles.

Sound quality

Improvements in download speeds has meant that we can download whole albums in a matter of minutes. File formats have also improved, so we can listen to music at high sound quality.

Software

You many need to install some software (provided by the music download website) to purchase and download your music. Some websites don't require software at all.

Some websites will charge you per song, while others may charge you a monthly subscription that provides you with a maximum number or unlimited downloads.
