Technology should make our lives easier
• Comprehensive logging
• Intuitive interface
• Small memory footprint
• Additional features that competing products do not offer
• Issues with product activation
Stopzilla is one of the most effective anti-spyware products on the market today. It manages to provide top-quality protection from malware and a high level of usability. Additionally, Stopzilla provides users with frequent updates and excellent support; this makes their product even more attractive.
Initially, we had problems installing Stopzilla because our activation key simply would not work. Technical support was able to resolve the problem in a few minutes, but encountering a major issue this early in the review process was certainly troubling. Fortunately, though, things did get much better from that point on.
Once we had the issue with our activation key sorted out, we went through Stopzilla's installation process without any issues. In fact, with the help of the installation wizard, we were able to have Stopzilla installed, configured, and ready to protect our system in about 5 minutes. While going through the wizard, users can opt for the default configuration, but it is also possible to customize settings concerning details like scan schedule and real-time security from the start. In any case, these settings can be tweaked easily enough following the installation, so there is no reason to stress a great deal over the initial setup.
Like most anti-spyware and anti-virus software these days, Stopzilla offers three different types of scans: quick, deep, and custom. The quick scan, which took about 5 minutes to finish on our test system, performs a scan of the areas most susceptible to malware infections, such as the system registry. The deep scan is more thorough, scanning through nearly everything in the file system. On a computer with decent but unimpressive specifications, the deep scan took a full 25 minutes to complete; there were no additional programs running. Custom scans can be configured to scan everything from the system registry to files on additional hard drives. Overall, the time required for Stopzilla to complete its scans is fairly average.
Not only does Stopzilla include great active-protection features, it performs thorough system scans and effectively removes most malicious software. For hard-to-remove malware, Stopzilla is even capable of loading prior to the Windows OS to perform a scan before malicious software is able to run and subvert removal attempts. In short, with scans that detect and remove the vast majority of malware infections, Stopzilla is one of the most effective anti-spyware programs available today.
Stopzilla's system requirements are low, especially by today's standards. Sunbelt Software recommends that systems running Stopzilla have at least a 400MHz processor and 512MB of memory. While several other anti-spyware solutions, such as Webroot Spy Sweeper, have lower system requirements, we found that Stopzilla ran exceptionally well. In fact, during one of our test scans, we were able to browse through websites, check e-mail, and perform some light gaming without any noticeable slowdowns.
Stopzilla provides frequent risk-definition updates, which means that Stopzilla is usually able to defend systems against the latest malware threats. With the default settings in place, Stopzilla will automatically update its risk definitions on a regular basis. Throughout the testing period, we had absolutely no issues with the update process, even when performing updates manually.
In addition to the standard security features, Stopzilla includes several capabilities that are not commonly found in anti-spyware software. For instance, Stopzilla includes tools that can be used to delete files, clear browsing history, and explore running processes. While these extra capabilities are unnecessary, they can be useful and are nice to have. The standard features, such as active protection, all function as expected and do not disappoint.
Ease of use
Stopzilla is incredibly easy to use, and we encountered absolutely no issues once we had it installed. With the default settings in place, Stopzilla performs scans and actively protects systems from malware with hardly any input from users. For users who have experience with anti-spyware software, customizing Stopzilla's settings should seem very familiar; this is a good thing.
Help & support
Initially, as we mentioned earlier, we had trouble getting our activation key to work. Obviously, this could have been a major problem, but telephone support was able to fix the issue in a quick, friendly manner. In our experience, for both major and minor issues with Stopzilla, support was available.
Also, in addition to e-mail and phone-based support, Stopzilla offers an excellent anti-spyware blog that is packed with interesting articles written by their research team.
If you are looking for anti-spyware software that is effective and light on system resources, Stopzilla is an excellent choice. Not only is it a powerful spyware remover, it is efficient, easy to use, and reasonably priced.
