Our verdict

Whether or not to use ParetoLogic Anti-Virus Plus is a bit of a dilemma – the software does offer good protection but there really aren’t many additional features that make the product a must-buy. We like the easy to use interface, the virus protection capabilities and the quick installation but there’s not a lot on offer aside from the basic antivirus technology.

Full review

ParetoLogic has been going since 2004 and its antivirus software is used in over 196 countries across the globe. The software protects against malware and other virus threats, and it is easy to use, making the ParetoLogic Anti-Virus Plus edition a decent choice for home use. This version of the ParetoLogic antivirus software is more efficient than previous versions. But does ParetoLogic offer anything that the other antivirus software applications can’t? We checked ParetoLogic against the competition to see how it stacks up.

We didn’t need to restart our system once we’d installed the software, which was a quick and easy process – this was one of the better aspects of the ParetoLogic system. The antivirus product is downloaded direct from the internet. You can also download a free scan on your PC.

The ParetoLogic software needs 190MB of disk space and 2GB of memory, and running it doesn’t take a lot out of your computer. After initial installation you probably won’t notice you have the ParetoLogic antivirus system running in the background.

ParetoLogic Anti-Virus Plus protects your PC against malware, adware, Trojans, worms, dialers, keyloggers, rootkits and spyware. The software works with traditional virus signature analysis and also with advanced heuristic technology. The heuristic protection looks at the behavior of files to see if they represent a risk. Many viruses can get through traditional signature-based technology but the behavioral method targets files that act like malware without being recognized viruses.

Internet – ParetoLogic stops risky files from automatically downloading on your PC and it blocks known dangerous websites.

The ParetoLogic Anti-Virus Pro software system is certified by West Coast labs to confidently remove viruses, spyware, Trojans and malware. We found the level of protection to be effective, and think that ParetoLogic is able to remove or repair infected files from your computer.

Scans & updates

You determine how often and how deep you want the scans from the ParetoLogic Anti-Virus system. Choose the frequency of your scans based on how often you use your computer, and whether you have any particular security concerns. We looked at the scanning options and saw that if you are operating the system at the medium or high protective level, you should run a full scan once a week. However, if you have the active protection turned off or you go for the gamer mode, you’ll probably need to scan the system on start up. The three scan options are a full scan, a quick scan, and a customized scan.

In addition, the ParetoLogic software initializes a start-up scan for the processes and programs you launch when you first boot up your PC. There’s also a whitelist for you to add trusted sites and processes to – these are omitted from scans as they are trusted by you not to cause a problem.

Scans run automatically and you can also run scans on demand. You receive virus definition files updates automatically and at least once a day, and you can also run these on demand.

ParetoLogic Anti-Virus Plus isn't exactly brimming over with extra features. In fact, the software really only offers virus protection and detection, with no backup disk or extra levels of protection.

Gamer mode – Game mode switches capability away from the antivirus so you have better performance for games and watching movies.

Ease of use

We looked at the ParetoLogic interface and think it is a straightforward but not overly inspiring system. You’ll find it easy to use and intuitive, but the design is fairly dark and there’s nothing special about the layout.

ParetoLogic offers a hands-off system of automatic scans, although you can also choose to change the settings and run manual scans and updates when you wish. The processes are easy to understand whether you are running the software in the background or taking a more hands-on approach.

Help & support

There’s an online manual that covers topics from getting started, to scanning and customizing the protection. There’s also a Knowledgebase with extra FAQs. It’s a shame that you can send an email but you can’t call or chat online with the experts. Direct support is rather limited with the ParetoLogic package although the Knowledgebase is comprehensive.

If you’re looking for basic but effective virus and malware protection you could give ParetoLogic Anti-Virus Plus a try. The ParetoLogic software is effective against viruses, malware and spyware and it is easy to use. However, the lack of additional useful features lets the product down.
