Full review

WISE-FTP has been a top contender for years with this review covering the 7th version of the FTP software (WISE-FTP 7). Having used version 5 successfully we were keen to catch up with this latest version of this well featured FTP program and see how it compared.

The download process from the website is quick and easy. The install is simple, though you are given options regarding the Task Planner utility without clear information about what this is. (Task Planner is an advanced feature which allows for FTP tasks to be automated and when installed usually runs at Windows Startup, which not all users might want.)

When you first run the software you are presented with configuration options, via the Configuration Wizard which you can return to at any time. Options are all pre-set for the novice user with clear instructions for more advanced users who might want to tweak their settings.

Transfers & Connectivity

You have control over connection attempts and timeouts, with options for automatic connectivity and port usage.

You can set a maximum of 10 concurrent transfer threads, and can use multi-part downloads for large files. Auto-resume is available for interrupted transfers.

Deleting from the remote server can’t be done with the delete key (needing to right click and select delete or use the relevant keyboard shortcut), which is a good safeguard but can get a little annoying, as is the fact you can’t rename a remote folder by clicking on it.

There are file/folder synchronization and mirroring options available.

Proxies & Protocols

Proxy settings allow for FTP and HTTP connections, with FTP, SOCKS4, SOCKS4A and SOCKS5 all available.

Connections can be made via FTP, SFTP (using SSH2), FTPS (implicit TLS/SSL) or FTPES (explicit TLS/SSL) with certificates and private keys to supplement standard passwords where applicable.

For users who need extra transfer security, encryption methods include Rijndael (up to 256), Blowfish and TrippleDES.

There is also a useful SSH Key Pair Generator.

The software has all the features you’d expect plus a number of useful extra ones.

The ability in import and export site connection settings is really useful if you have multiple computers or just want to generate a backup.

When configuring a site you can set a Time Offset to ensure that date/time stamps on files don’t go awry across time zones.

There is also a Synchronized Browsing feature which allows you to change the directories on your PC and the FTP server simultaneously if the directory structure is identical.

The Update Manager is helpful to keep the software update, though it get’s a little monotonous if set to check whenever you open the program.

The mix of Macros and the Task Planner service help automate site maintenance, or remote backups, if that’s something you need.

Ease of use

For the advanced user the interface offers all the options you’d need, and with the default settings it’s also easy for the novice to use.

Drag and drop is available between the main 2 panels (Local and Remote servers) which can both be split between directory structure and open folder views. There is also a Transfer Panel between these main panels as a supplementary form of transfer control. You can also drag and drop from your desktop, which not all programs offer.

The FTP log has both an Advanced and Simple view, depending on your needs.

The Transfer Progress window has plenty of information but it doesn’t allow for pausing or prioritization of individual uploads.

Help & support

There is comprehensive documentation available both via the Help file within the program and as a download from the website.

There is also support available via the new support center from manufacturer AceBit. There is a Ticket system for users who have purchased the software (with 48hr responses) and for those who have also purchased premium support (with max 12hr response times for working days). An active Forum and Knowledge base is available for all.

WISE-FTP is well established and well built. Version 7 is another step forward with an improved user interface and even more features making this one of the most complete packages available.
