Our verdict

The F-Secure system is not as comprehensive as the top two mobile security software packages as it lacks an anti-spam function, its parental controls are more limited and online back-up of your mobile data is extra. However, the system is functional and worth buying to protect your valuable data.

Full review

F-Secure Mobile Security helps protect your identity online and identifies dangerous sites, as well as gives you anti-theft features to safeguard your data if your mobile is stolen or lost. With anti-virus capabilities and parental control features, is this mobile security system worth looking into?

There are a number of different ways to install F-Secure Mobile Security to your phone. You do not need to be technically savvy to install or run F-Secure Mobile Security. You sign up for a yearly subscription, and it’s cheaper if you sign up for two years at once.

The software works on Android, Symbian and Windows Mobile operating systems (although the parental control features are not compatible with Windows Mobile 6 Professional and Windows Mobile 6 Standard).

The anti-theft feature for F-Secure Mobile is actually a free add-on that you can download directly from the website to your phone. With this feature you can lock your phone once it’s lost (or when you’ve left it unattended at work on your desk) with one SMS message. That way no one can use your phone until you get it back and enter the correct password.

Alternatively, send a text message to locate your phone on a map displayed on the Internet. You can also erase all the data on your phone to leave blank folders.

An automatic process begins when someone steals your phone and replaces the SIM card. The phone locks down and you receive notification of the new phone number.

Malware protection

Anti-virus & spyware protection - F-Secure does a decent job at protecting your phone from the threat of online viruses. If a virus is detected during a real-time scan, the virus is immediately quarantined and added to the infected list. The software also scans for spyware and similar malware instructions. F-Secure Mobile Security will automatically scan all accessed and modified data on your phone for malware when the real-time scanning is enabled.

One feature F-Secure Mobile Security offers is browsing protection, which the manufacturers claim makes online banking and buying online more secure. F-Secure automatically blocks suspicious sites that could open up your online identity to fraud or hacking.

Firewall - By default the firewall protection level is set to normal, which provided excellent protection and did not affect the most common applications. Firewall is not available on Android devices.

F-Secure doesn’t offer any protection against spam and unwanted text messages, which is a shame considering the amount of spam many mobile phone users receive on a daily basis.

Parental controls

The parental control aspects of this mobile security device are limited, although you can use the GPS feature to locate your child’s phone, and your child, should either go missing. Parents may also control kids’ viewing of undesirable websites by blocking websites in certain categories, but not specific websites, and there is no way of monitoring your child’s use of his or her phone.

The F-Secure Mobile Security program uploads and completes virus and software updates on a continuous basis, as they are needed and when your phone is connected to the internet.

Ease of use

We found no problems using the F-Secure software. The application is easy to navigate and the virus protection runs automatically without you having to worry about it. The notification procedure for infected files is simple and clear. If you have problems with anything the internet support in the form of FAQs and articles is comprehensive.

Help & support

Technical support is available by telephone, email and from help files, manuals and FAQs provided online. We found the telephone support to be excellent. Live chat support has just been added to the F-Secure support package, which is an imprvement and adds to the overall quality of assistance.

While not as advanced as some of its competitors, F-Secure Mobile Security is still a whole lot better than many other mobile security packages. It offers some good quality features that work, and some features that other providers don’t offer such as browser protection.
