Serif MoviePlus X6 Review
This product has been dis-continued by Serif.
Technology should make our lives easier
• Simple layout and easy to use
• Fun transitions and features
• Unlimited tracks
• Good for beginners
• Fewer transitions and effects
• Fewer advanced features
Serif MoviePlus X6 is a simple, easy to use package that is ideal for beginners. While the software doesn’t contain all the advanced features that some other brands provide, this can be an advantage for people wanting to create a professional-looking video without the hassle.
Serif MoviePlus is a great beginner’s package and this quality extends to the setup. When you first start a project in MoviePlus you are shown a wizard that asks whether you want to open an existing project, create a new video, or learn about creating videos. Creating a new project or opening a new one puts the timeline and the media windows onto the screen and you can start the creation process here.
Serif MoviePlus X6 is for Windows 8, 7, Vista or XP. You will need 1GB RAM, 0.96GB of hard drive space and a monitor with 1024 x 768 resolution. You will also need the applicable writers for creating VCDs, DVDs or Blu-ray discs.
This package supports AVCHD and HDV formats, plus it is compatible with full HD 1080, 50p and 60p recordings. If you are working with HD video then the program creates a low-res proxy copy that is faster to edit and takes up less memory. When it comes to exporting the project then the original HD quality is restored.
Importing videos to the timeline is simple and mainly hassle-free and you can also easily add other elements into the video from your PC, such as photos and music.
MoviePlus gives you two modes for editing – storyboard and timeline. The storyboard mode is the easy-to use option for beginners and when you want something simple – dragging the clips to the storyboard automatically places a cross fade between clips and you are good to go. If you are looking for a procedure that allows you to create more complex projects with advanced features (and unlimited tracks) you can use the timeline mode. This choice of editing options is a good addition to the software and makes it convenient for both beginners and more advanced editors to use.
A variety of tools make it easy to edit your video and delete unwanted parts, plus change the properties of audio and video and add transitions and effects. There are not so many transitions and effects to choose from as other software packages but you get enough to be able to create interesting movies. You can flip and spin video clips, adjust the color and exposure of the clips, and edit the panning and zooming options. In addition, there are unlimited tracks available for each project which really helps you to add elements to your video, and gives you better control over adding sound effects, visual effects and voiceovers.
If you don’t want to spend a long time editing your movie you can use a quick-fix tool that quickly pulls together all the features and elements you need to create a movie with a defined theme, then teaches you how to pull together all the files you need.
With the unlimited tracks available the MoviePlus package provides a good degree of control over adding and editing audio for your movie. There are a number of ways you can work with audio, including adding the audio from your video recorder’s input; using a separate mic to capture sound; recording and adding a narration track; and digitally ripping music CDs or adding music already on your PC. The Serif MoviePlus X6 package also supports Dolby Digital Stereo for a deeper and better-quality audio product.
MoviePlus X6 gives a decent performance over all aspects of the video and audio editing process, including rendering speed. The software doesn’t take up too much room on your computer and it is quick to use.
An easy-to-use disc authoring feature gives you the chance to create animated menus using customizable templates or you can create your own menu style from scratch. Using the menu, viewers can jump from scene to scene and preview scenes from thumbnails before viewing. MoviePlus gives you a number of different templates to choose from.
Exporting the finished movie is simple. MoviePlus supports MP4, MPG, AVI, QuickTime MOV, WMV and more, and also gives you tools to use that help get the best export quality in the smallest size of file.
Burn direct to DVD or Blu-ray and also to mobile devices and smartphones, to YouTube and Facebook. Choose from pre-set options that make exporting simple and stress-free. You can also convert a movie file type, or convert a whole set of movies at the same time.
Ease of use
The Serif software does make an easy job out of creating movies, and the absence of overly complicated features makes the process good for beginners. We found the layout to be reasonably clear and easy to navigate, and you will be able to easily manage even large projects using the timeline feature. If you get stuck there are online tips and instructions and the creation wizard takes you through the whole process of editing your video – good for people who have little time to spend on editing.
Help & support
Serif MoviePlus comes with online support in the form of a comprehensive set of user manuals and searchable articles about all aspects of creating and editing a movie. In addition there are FAQs and video tutorials, along with a knowledgebase. You can also log on to the community forums if you want to ask fellow users a question about the software. There is a customer service telephone line and also a ticket system for technical queries and questions.
A competent and entertaining video editing package that comes with all you need to create a slick final movie and export it to DVD with menus and other authoring features.
